Master Dissertation on the Caterpillar’s Methods of Defense
A few days ago I was watching Discovery Channel and there was a program about caterpillars. Although I do not like all these insects, I was really interested with caterpillars and particularly with their methods of defense and survival in the wild nature.
I thought that it could be a perfect topic for somebody’s master dissertation. So, if you need to write your master dissertation in biology, you can try investigating this topic. If you want, I can tell you a little about what I have found out, and perhaps it will be useful for the master dissertation.
You know, I have always been amazed with how smartly everything is organized in the nature. All the living creatures have to fight for their lives and they have thousands of the ways for that.
Caterpillars are not the exception. Somebody may think “How these small living things can struggle with their enemies?” Yet, they can, and they do it really successfully.
First of all, in the course of the evolution they learned to look like some plants and even some objects of the environment. So, their enemies cannot distinguish them. Other caterpillars have hair on their bodies. Their hair can be spiny, and thus dangerous for some birds to eat. Other species of the caterpillars have venomous hair.
Another interesting fact is about the poison that the caterpillars contain in their bodies. There are a lot of poisonous plants, but caterpillars learned to eat them. This allows caterpillars to amass the poison in their bodies. Inside caterpillars this poison turns into very toxic one, and can be really noxious for many predators.
So, this is just a small piece of information about the methods of defense of the caterpillars, but you can find out much more in your master dissertation.
